Why We Source Tallow From a Single Nova Scotia Farm — And Why It Matters for Your Skin
Share
When people ask me what makes Heel to Heart Spa Products different from other natural skincare brands, I always come back to one thing: we know exactly where our tallow comes from.
Not roughly. Not approximately. Exactly. One farm. One source. Every batch.
That level of traceability is rare in the skincare industry — even among brands that claim to use natural or clean ingredients. And it's the foundation that makes every product we sell something I can stand behind completely.
Why Single-Source Tallow?
Tallow quality varies enormously depending on the animal's diet, living conditions, and the rendering process used. Commodity tallow — the kind used in industrial products — can come from feedlot animals fed corn and soy, treated with hormones and antibiotics, and rendered using high-heat industrial processes that degrade the nutritional quality of the fat.
Grass-fed tallow from pasture-raised animals is a completely different ingredient. The fat profile is richer in beneficial fatty acids, higher in fat-soluble vitamins, and more stable — meaning it has a longer shelf life without the need for synthetic preservatives.
By sourcing from a single Nova Scotia farm, we can verify every one of these factors. We know the animals are pasture-raised on clean Maritime grasses. We know the rendering is done properly. We know the result before we even start making products.
The Nova Scotia Loyal Difference
All of our tallow products qualify for the Nova Scotia Loyal designation — a program that certifies genuine local sourcing and production within Nova Scotia. This isn't a marketing claim. It's a verified standard that means our ingredients are authentically local and our products are truly made here.
For us, Nova Scotia Loyal represents something deeper than certification. It represents a commitment to our community, our province, and the farmers and producers who make this work possible. When you buy from Heel to Heart, you're supporting not just our small business but the entire local supply chain behind it.
Our Rendering Process
Once we receive the tallow from our farm partner, we render it ourselves using a four-pass wet process — two passes with salt, two with baking soda. This is a more labour-intensive approach than single-pass rendering, but the result is a purer, cleaner, whiter tallow with a neutral scent and exceptional skin feel.
The rendered tallow is then the base for every product in our line — from the RESTORE Heel Balm and REPLENISH Body Butter to our EASE Lip Balm and Tallow Cream Melts.
What This Means for You
When you apply one of our products, you're applying something with a complete, traceable history. You know the animal was grass-fed and pasture-raised in Nova Scotia. You know the rendering was done carefully and cleanly. You know the product was made by hand in small batches in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.
No mystery ingredients. No supply chain uncertainty. No compromise.
That's what clean skincare actually means to us — not just an absence of bad ingredients, but a complete understanding of every ingredient that's present.
