Non-Toxic Skincare: What It Really Means and How to Find Products You Can Actually Trust
Share
"Non-toxic." "Clean." "Natural." "Safe." Walk through any beauty aisle and these words are everywhere. But they're largely unregulated marketing terms — meaning any brand can use them without meeting any particular standard.
So how do you actually find skincare that's genuinely free from harmful ingredients? And what does non-toxic skincare really look like in practice?
At Heel to Heart Spa Products, we think about this question constantly — because the entire reason our line exists is that I couldn't find products I trusted for my own sensitive skin. Here's what I've learned.
What Makes a Skincare Product Toxic?
Most concern around skincare toxicity centres on a group of commonly used synthetic ingredients that have been linked — with varying degrees of evidence — to hormone disruption, skin sensitization, allergic reactions, and other health concerns. The most commonly flagged include:
- Parabens — synthetic preservatives (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) linked to endocrine disruption
- Phthalates — often hidden in "fragrance," associated with hormone disruption
- Synthetic fragrance — a single ingredient that can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemicals
- Petroleum derivatives — petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin, which are refined from crude oil
- Formaldehyde releasers — preservatives that slowly release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) — a harsh surfactant that strips the skin's natural barrier
The challenge is that these ingredients are legal, widely used, and often don't cause obvious immediate harm. The concern is cumulative exposure over years — using multiple products containing these ingredients every day adds up.
The Problem With "Fragrance"
"Fragrance" or "parfum" on an ingredient list is a legal loophole that allows brands to protect proprietary scent formulas by listing them as a single ingredient — even when that "fragrance" contains dozens or hundreds of individual chemicals.
This is why at Heel to Heart, we never use synthetic fragrance. Every scent in our products comes from pure essential oils with documented properties and fully disclosed ingredients. When our RESTORE Heel Balm smells like ginger or sweet orange, that's because it contains ginger or sweet orange essential oil — nothing more.
How to Read an Ingredient Label
Ingredients on skincare products are listed in descending order of concentration. The first ingredient is present in the largest amount; the last ingredients are present in the smallest amounts.
A few things to look for:
- Water (aqua) as the first ingredient — most of what you're paying for is water, which means preservatives are required to keep it stable
- "Fragrance" or "parfum" anywhere on the list — an undisclosed mixture
- Long lists of ingredients with names you can't pronounce — each one is a potential sensitizer or irritant
- Multiple types of preservatives — a sign the formula needs significant chemical stabilization
By contrast, here's the ingredient list for our EASE Tallow Lip Balm: grass-fed beef tallow, peppermint essential oil. That's it. No hidden anything.
Why Tallow Is Inherently Non-Toxic
Grass-fed tallow is one of the most genuinely non-toxic skincare ingredients available. It requires no preservatives because it's naturally stable — the same saturated fat structure that makes it shelf-stable also makes it resistant to oxidation and bacterial growth.
It requires no emulsifiers because there's no water to separate from. No synthetic fragrance because pure tallow has a clean, neutral scent that works beautifully with essential oils. No fillers because tallow is so nutrient-dense that nothing needs to be added to make it effective.
Our REPLENISH Body Butter, Tallow Cream Melts, and RESTORE Heel Balm are all formulated on this principle — include only what serves the skin, exclude everything that doesn't.
Non-Toxic and Nova Scotia Made
Every product in our Heel to Heart collection is made in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia from grass-fed tallow and carefully chosen clean ingredients. We believe non-toxic skincare shouldn't be a luxury — it should be the standard.
If you've been struggling to find products you can actually trust, we'd love to be the answer.
