Shopping at Halifax Farmers Markets: A Guide to Finding the Best Local Products in HRM
Share
Halifax Regional Municipality has one of the most vibrant local producer communities in Atlantic Canada. Farmers markets across HRM give Nova Scotians direct access to the people growing their food, raising their livestock, and making their goods by hand — and the quality is extraordinary.
As a market vendor myself — I run the Heel to Heart Spa Products booth at two Halifax-area markets every week — I want to share what makes the HRM farmers market scene so special, and how to get the most out of it.
Greater Bedford Farmers Market
The Greater Bedford Farmers Market runs every Wednesday from 4–7pm. Bedford is one of the fastest-growing communities in HRM, and its farmers market reflects that energy — a mix of longtime producers and exciting newcomers, all bringing genuinely local goods to the community.
You'll find us here every Wednesday with our full line of grass-fed tallow skincare, including our bestselling RESTORE Heel Balm, REPLENISH Body Butter, and RECOVER Magnesium Spray.
Fairview Farmers Market
The Fairview Farmers Market runs every Thursday from 4–7pm. Fairview is a wonderfully diverse Halifax neighbourhood, and its market has a warm, community-first feeling that I genuinely love. It's become one of my favourite places to spend a Thursday evening.
Both markets accept cash and card. Parking is available. And the experience of buying directly from producers — being able to ask questions, smell and sample products, and know exactly where your purchase is going — is something no online shopping experience can replicate.
Why Farmers Markets Are Worth Your Time
I know shopping at a farmers market takes more effort than ordering online or picking up something at the pharmacy. But here's what you get that you can't get anywhere else:
- Real conversations with makers — when you stop at our booth, you're talking to me, the person who made every product on the table. I can tell you exactly what's in it, where the tallow came from, and how to use it.
- Freshness you can't buy in a store — our products are made in small batches specifically for market season. Nothing has been sitting in a warehouse.
- Community investment — every dollar spent at a Halifax farmers market stays in HRM. It supports local farmers, local makers, and local families.
- Discovery — you'll find products at farmers markets that simply don't exist in stores. Products made by people who are doing it because they love it, not because a corporation decided there was a market for it.
What to Look for at the Market
When you're shopping any farmers market, the best questions to ask any producer are: Where does this ingredient come from? How is this made? How long has it been sitting here?
Good producers will answer these questions enthusiastically. They're proud of their sourcing and their process. At our booth, I love being asked — because the answers are part of what makes our products worth buying.
Our grass-fed tallow comes from a single Nova Scotia farm. Our products are made by hand in Lower Sackville. Everything we sell qualifies for Nova Scotia Loyal certification. And it's all available to try in person at the market before you buy.
